Plot Of Beloved
The novel beloved begins in the time frame of 1873, in the aftermath of slavery and civil war. The protaganist of the novel is Sethe, she is a slave on a farm in Kentucky by the name of Sweet Home. Here she lives with other slaves who go by the names of Paul A, Paul D, Paul F, Sixo, Halle and his mother Baby Suggs. Mr.Garner is the owner of this farm along with his wife Mrs.Garner, they would not be the usual slave owners you have at the time they gave these slaves a very stable life style. He allows the slaves have a very loose life style, because he allows them to shoot, hunt and pick their own partners on sweethome. After much conflict over sethe between the slave boys on sweet home Halle becomes Sethe's husband.
Mr. garner then dies unexpectedly and a schoolteacher takes over Sweethome. He treats the slaves like animals and as they realize the quality of their life deteriorates they try flee for freedom. Sethe and Paul D are the only ones who suceed in this. The other Pauls are killed and Sixo is shot. Halle witnesses Sethe being raped and beaten by the school teachers nephew, and he dissapears. So the reader assumes he dies also. Paul D is sold and spends time in jail as he attempted to try killing his new master. But then manages to escape.
When sethe trying to escape she is coming to the tail end of her pregnancy on her fourth child, she sends the other three children to Baby Suggs her mother in laws house who was bought out of slavery by her son Halle.
On Sethes journey to freedom she gives birth to her second daughter Denver. A white girl by the name of Amy Denver helps her give birth to denver. Additionally she is then helped by two black people who go by Stamp Paid and Ella. They aid Sethe to Baby Suggs house in Cinncinati where she is united with her children. Baby Suggs has become a significant person in the eyes of her black community and is known as a preacher.
After a period of time the school teacher comes to retrieve Sethe. In finding her she is covered in blood after attempting to kill her chidren so sethe could relieve them from the life they were destined to live of slavery. She succeeded in murdering one and relentlesly hurt the other two. Sethe also intended on committing suicide. The two boys Howard and Bulgar that survive runaway. Sethe is prevented from smashing denvers head of a wall and is sent to prison with Denver as a baby.
To my knowledge sethe has been in jail for around 6 to 8 months with her baby Denver. She is saved by the Bodwins from being hung and also various societies in favour of abolition of slavery.
Sethe and Denver then move back to the house on Bluestone Road 124. Both Sethe and Denver are iscolated from the black community living there. Baby suggs dies. The house haunted by a ghost of the by the ghost of a baby girl who we know to be the eldest daughter which killed. The house is filled with misery and depression.
Palu D then arrives on Sethes door step after his travels and banishes the ghost. After a day out to the carnival it looks like a promising future as a family. But when they reached 124 A young girl arrives. Sethe and Denver eventually come around to believe this was the ghost. Sethes daughter she killed appearing back in human form.
When Paul D discovers that Sethe commited this crime of intafacide he leaves 124. He sleeps in the basement of the church. Beloved and Sethes relationship becomes more intense and sethe devolps this fixated bond over her. Sethe is obsessed with satisfying Beloveds needs because of this guilt that hangs over her for killling her baby.
Denver realises she must do something, so she leaves 124 for the first time in 12years. So she she looks for a job of her old teacher Lady Jones. The community then help Denver out by leaving them food. Ella the lady who helped with Sethes escape takes leadership after hearing the circumstances and decides to get the women of the community to follower her over to 124 where they perform and exorcism and the ghost dissapears.
Later then Paul D comes to visit and finds Sethe lying on Baby Suggs bed. He tells sethe they must overcome their past together. She must stop grieving and live her life. This is where the novel ends with the possibility of a future life for Sethe.
I believe the plot in Beloved is very complex, as Toni Morrison uses flashbacks from the past and links it into the present. This makes it very difficult for the reader to follow the plot and the events. The flashbacks are used to show the painful past of these ex-slaves, therefore the historical element becomes clearer as the novel unravels.
The plot itself is always shifting thus making it hard for the reader to keep up with who is speaking. The plot is not told in a consistent matter making the reader have to find out who the speaker is; this happens as the setting is always changing from kentucky, sweethome, 124 and Paul D's past. The reason I believe Toni Morrison does this is so that she emphasises the pain slaves went through. My own outlook on this is that she uses the past as the realstic view on slaves and the present as her own magical creative storyline. In the end the novel is given an optimistic spin when we see that Paul D, Sethe and Denver begin to somewhat overcome their past.
